NAIROBI, July 3 – The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has launched a scathing attack on sections of the Kenyan media, accusing some outlets of abandoning professional journalism in favour of sensational headlines and political activism.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on Friday, former Nairobi Governor claimed that some media houses were fuelling fear and political tension by publishing unverified reports instead of factual news.

Kidero said the media has a constitutional duty to inform, educate and promote national unity, warning that reckless reporting could undermine peace and public confidence.

He maintained that security agencies have a legal obligation to protect lives and property and urged Kenyans to report cases of alleged disappearances or abductions to investigative agencies instead of relying on speculation circulating online.

During the briefing, UDA Secretary General defended the government’s record on constitutional rights, saying freedom of the press must be exercised alongside professional responsibility.

Omar dismissed claims that the government was targeting the media, insisting that only journalists or media organisations that spread misinformation or content capable of inciting violence should be held accountable under the law.

The UDA officials also addressed the ongoing debate surrounding government advertising and financial obligations to media houses.

Omar argued that the current administration should not be blamed for financial commitments inherited from previous governments, saying obligations arising from earlier administrations should be handled within the applicable legal and financial frameworks.

He maintained that the Kenya Kwanza administration would continue to manage public resources prudently.

The leaders also defended the government’s reliance on technical experts in public service, saying professionals have played a critical role in stabilising the economy and strengthening governance.

On recent court rulings affecting the Executive, Omar said President remains committed to respecting judicial decisions and implementing constitutional requirements.

The party further announced plans to intensify its communication through digital platforms, saying social media and other online channels have become increasingly important in reaching Kenyans, particularly the youth.

UDA maintained that its criticism was directed at what it described as irresponsible journalism and not at the media industry as a whole, reiterating its support for press freedom alongside adherence to professional ethics.
