
Kenya Airways is set for another change at the top after acting Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Capt. George Kamal announced his resignation from the national carrier.
Kamal, who has attributed his decision to personal reasons, will leave the airline at the end of September after completing a 30-day transition period.
Kenya Airways said on Tuesday that his formal exit will take effect on September 30, 2026.He took over as acting CEO on December 16, 2025, after serving as the airline’s Chief Operating Officer for three years.
During his time in the senior leadership team, Kamal was involved in efforts to stabilise the airline’s operations and implement its ongoing turnaround strategy.
The Kenya Airways board thanked him for his contribution, leadership and commitment during his time at the company and wished him success in his future plans.
The airline has already made arrangements for an interim replacement. Habil Waswani, the company’s Secretary and Director of Legal Services and Regulatory Compliance, has been appointed acting Group Managing Director and CEO from September 15, 2026.
Waswani has worked at Kenya Airways for more than five years, dealing with aviation and airline-related legal matters as well as commercial and corporate law.
He has more than 24 years of experience in corporate and commercial legal practice and has previously held senior positions in listed banking and insurance institutions.
Waswani holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi, a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law and is a Certified Public Secretary.
He also holds a Global Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the United States International University, earned through a collaboration with Columbia Business School at Columbia University.
Meanwhile, the board has started the search for a substantive Group Managing Director and CEO through a competitive recruitment process.
Kenya Airways said its focus remains on implementing its turnaround strategy, improving operational reliability, returning to sustainable positive financial performance and achieving its targeted growth ambitions.
