NAIROBI, June 29 – President William Ruto on Monday officially opened the Sh3.58 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, describing the project as a significant investment aimed at improving mobility in Nairobi and easing chronic traffic congestion.
The road project, undertaken by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), is expected to ease traffic at the heavily congested Junction Mall roundabout, where motorists have long experienced delays, especially during rush hours. Funding for the project was provided through a concessional loan from Spain’s Corporate International Fund (FIEM).
Speaking at the launch, President Ruto said the completion of the flyover reflects the government’s determination to invest in infrastructure that promotes economic development while improving transport services for residents of the capital.
He observed that traffic jams have for years imposed a heavy economic burden by increasing fuel consumption, wasting productive hours and slowing the movement of people and goods. The President expressed confidence that the new interchange will substantially reduce travel time along the Ngong Road corridor and improve access to surrounding areas.
The completed project features a four-lane flyover together with upgraded road sections designed to separate through traffic from vehicles joining or exiting neighbouring roads and commercial centres. It also includes dedicated pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes and other non-motorised transport facilities intended to enhance road safety.
KURA said the new infrastructure is expected to remove one of Nairobi’s most persistent traffic bottlenecks and improve the daily commute for thousands of motorists, public service vehicles and other road users.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the flyover is part of a broader government programme to modernise urban road networks and improve transport efficiency across Nairobi. He noted that better road infrastructure is critical in supporting the city’s role as a leading commercial and investment hub.
During the event, President Ruto also outlined other ongoing transport projects, including the Kenyatta Avenue–Upper Hill Viaduct, saying construction is progressing well and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
He further said the national government is working closely with Nairobi County to expand and rehabilitate more than 200 kilometres of roads across the city in an effort to improve accessibility and support economic activities.
Motorists and residents welcomed the commissioning of the flyover, expressing hope that it will significantly reduce traffic delays that have long affected the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road junction, particularly during peak travel periods.
The opening of the flyover marks another milestone in the government’s infrastructure development agenda, which seeks to improve urban transport, reduce congestion and strengthen economic growth through strategic investment in road networks.
