Kenyans across the country have all reasons to smile as the price of wheat flour is expected to shoot down after receiving the first bulk carrier with Ukrainian wheat since Russia launched a military invasion against Ukraine in February 2022.
The 51,400 tons of wheat will be offloaded from the “Super Henry” vessel at the port of Mombasa.
The Honorary Consulate of Ukraine says the consignment will be used for commercial purposes in the country by Louis Dreyfus Company.
“It is expected that high representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in Kenya and the national and county government officials will attend the offloading of the ship to stress the importance of keeping uninterrupted supply of grain and other agricultural commodities from Ukraine to Kenya.”
Statement sent to newsrooms also indicates that on July 22, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN signed an agreement in Istanbul that concerns the unblocking of 3 Ukrainian seaports. Russia also signed a mirror agreement with Turkey
and the UN, providing assurances of safe and secure passage of the ships, which allowed the shipments of Ukrainian grain and foodstuff via Black Sea ‘grain corridor’.
Since the first ship with Ukrainian grain left port under the agreement on August 1, 7.38million tones of agricultural products have already been exported. As of October 13, a total of 331 ships with food for the countries of Africa, Asia, and Europe were dispatched from Ukrainian ports.
Notwithstanding the heavy damage from the ongoing unprovoked Russian aggression, Ukraine is committed to safeguard global food security and do everything possible to deliver food to those who need it the most
