NAIVASHA, Nakuru County — Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his criticism of President William Ruto’s administration as he addressed residents in Naivasha on Saturday.
Gachagua’s appearance in Naivasha comes a day after his convoy was attacked during his political tour of Nakuru County, an incident that left several vehicles in his motorcade with shattered windscreens and rear windows.
Speaking to residents, Gachagua condemned the attack and accused individuals allied to the government of attempting to disrupt opposition activities.
He maintained that political competition should be settled through democratic means rather than intimidation and violence.
The former Deputy President also turned his attention to President Ruto, stepping up his criticism of the Head of State and defending former President Uhuru Kenyatta amid an increasingly charged political environment ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua has in recent months positioned DCP as a major opposition vehicle, seeking to expand its support beyond his traditional political base as the party prepares for the 2027 polls.
His Nakuru tour is part of the party’s ongoing grassroots mobilisation programme, with the DCP seeking to establish a stronger presence in the Rift Valley and other parts of the country.
The former Deputy President’s visit to Naivasha also comes against the backdrop of growing political tensions between the opposition and the Kenya Kwanza administration, with both sides increasingly exchanging accusations over political mobilisation, intimidation and the use of goons.
The attack on Gachagua’s convoy has further heightened concerns over political violence as parties and political formations begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Opposition leaders, including People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, have condemned the reported attack and called for investigations into the incident.
Gachagua is expected to continue with his engagements in Nakuru as DCP steps up its efforts to consolidate grassroots support and challenge the ruling establishment ahead of the next General Election.

The former Vice President has also dismissed speculation of a possible political deal with Ruto, insisting that he remains firmly in the opposition camp.
His declaration adds momentum to the emerging 2027 political contest, which is increasingly shaping up around competing opposition formations and President Ruto’s re-election bid.
Kalonzo’s message is clear: he does not want a political appointment or accommodation from Ruto — he wants to meet him at the ballot and let Kenyans decide.
