Executive director of the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) Daniel Mokua Onsomu has been suspended from the party and he will no longer be allowed to transact business on behalf of the party.
The decision of the party has since been communicated to the auditor the political party.
In a letter dated June 26, 2026, and addressed to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), the party’s governing body said the decision was reached during a meeting held on June 24.
“We write to formally notify your office that the Governing body of the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), at its meeting held on 24th June 2026, resolved to suspend Daniel Mokua Onsomu… from the position of Executive Director, effective immediately,” the letter states.

The party further directed the Registrar of Political Parties to remove Onsomu’s name from its official records as an authorized official and signatory.
“Consequently, Mr. Onsomu is no longer authorized to represent, act on behalf of, or transact any business in the name of the Party. His name should be removed from your records as an authorized official and signatory of the Party,” reads part of the letter.
NEDP also informed the Registrar that all future official communication with the office would be signed by other authorized party officials and requested that its records be updated accordingly.
The letter is signed by the party’s Chairperson, Dr. John Nyamu, Treasurer Nancy Muthami, and Founding Member Peterson Maina. It bears the official stamp of the Registrar of Political Parties indicating it was received on June 26, 2026.
The suspension comes at a time when the relatively young political party has recently attracted national attention through its party leader, former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko. Sonko has been vocal on national issues and was recently in the spotlight after paying cash bail for more than 150 people arrested during the June 25 Gen Z memorial protests.
It remains unclear what prompted Onsomu’s suspension, as the letter does not disclose the reasons behind the governing body’s decision. By the time of publication, Onsomu had not publicly responded to the allegations or the suspension. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties is expected to act on the party’s request after reviewing the notification.
