Matatus to Operate Normally During June 25 Anniversary Protests, MoA President Albert Karakacha assures workers and business people

NAIROBI, June 24, 2026 — The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has assured Kenyans that public transport services will continue uninterrupted on Thursday, June 25, despite concerns over possible disruptions during activities marking the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024 demonstrations.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, MOA President Albert Karakacha said the public transport sector remains committed to serving wananchi while ensuring the safety of passengers, transport workers and property.

The association expressed solidarity with families and individuals affected by the events of June 25, 2024, noting that justice, accountability and respect for the rule of law remain critical for national healing.

“While we are aware of concerns regarding possible disruptions, we encourage all matatu owners, drivers, crew and staff to remain calm, exercise restraint and continue providing transport services responsibly and professionally,” the statement from MOA President Albert Karakacha read.

MOA emphasized that matatu operations across the country will proceed as normal, while respecting the constitutional rights of citizens and prioritizing public safety.
The association also condemned acts of violence and destruction that may arise during public gatherings.

“MOA strongly condemns all forms of violence, vandalism, arson, looting and destruction of property. The safety and wellbeing of passengers, transport workers, vehicles, businesses and the public remain our foremost priority,” the statement added.

The transport lobby further called on all stakeholders, including citizens, civil society organizations, community leaders, businesses and government agencies, to maintain peace and engage in constructive dialogue.

According to the association, collaborative efforts aimed at promoting justice, accountability and national unity are essential in addressing the country’s challenges.

The assurance comes amid heightened public attention ahead of planned commemorative activities marking the June 25, 2024 protests, which left a lasting impact on the country’s political and social landscape.

MOA urged both transport operators and members of the public to remain vigilant, act responsibly and contribute to maintaining peace and order throughout the day
