Political principals under the United Alternative Government of Kenya have taken a major step towards forging a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The leaders, who met at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County on Monday, August 24, 2026, unanimously agreed to sign a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement aimed at keeping them together and ensuring they rally behind one presidential candidate.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the principals said the agreement commits them individually and collectively to remain united, participate in a credible process of selecting their presidential candidate and subsequently support and campaign for the candidate chosen to carry their common mandate in the 2027 elections.
The leaders described the decision as an important transition in their political journey, saying it was driven by the need to put the national interest ahead of individual political ambitions and party differences.
“We recognise that millions of Kenyans are looking beyond individual leaders and political parties,” the statement said, adding that citizens were questioning whether those seeking to provide alternative leadership had the courage to set aside personal ambitions, historical differences and partisan considerations.
The principals said their response was unequivocal: “Kenya comes first.”
The development signals renewed efforts by opposition parties and political leaders to consolidate their forces ahead of the 2027 presidential contest, with the unity arrangement expected to provide a framework for settling on a single presidential flag bearer.
The coalition said the selection of its presidential candidate would be undertaken through a credible process, after which all the principals would be expected to support the eventual candidate.
The meeting brought together representatives of several political parties, including Wiper Patriotic Front, People’s Liberation Party (PLP), Democratic Congress Party (DCP), Azimio la Umoja and other parties represented in the joint statement.
The principals said their commitment was intended to present Kenyans with a credible, democratic and transformative alternative government.
The agreement comes as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election, with various parties and leaders positioning themselves to challenge the government and shape the next political administration.
The United Alternative Government said its immediate priority was to consolidate unity among its constituent parties and leaders while building a common political platform capable of winning the confidence of millions of Kenyans.
The leaders maintained that their decision to work together was not merely about individual political interests but about responding to what they described as the aspirations of Kenyans for alternative leadership.
The principals concluded by reaffirming their commitment to unity, a credible candidate-selection process and a common campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
