NAIROBI, October 15, 2026 — The Advocates Complaints Commission has intensified public sensitisation efforts to help Kenyans understand how to report advocates suspected of professional misconduct and seek redress through the appropriate channels.

Commission Chairperson Moses Cheboi said many members of the public remained unaware of the institution’s mandate, limiting their ability to access its services when they encounter challenges with legal practitioners.

Speaking during a stakeholder sensitisation forum at a Nairobi hotel on Thursday, Cheboi said the commission was working to bridge the information gap by educating the public on its complaint-handling procedures and the professional standards expected of advocates.

He noted that some Kenyans continued to seek assistance from chiefs, religious institutions and other offices when faced with complaints against lawyers, despite the existence of an institution specifically mandated to handle such grievances.

“Advocates Complaints Commission is a very old organisation, and yet it is not very well known,” Cheboi said, calling for increased public awareness of its services.

He encouraged Kenyans who have concerns about the professional conduct of advocates to familiarise themselves with the commission’s mandate and use the available channels to lodge complaints.

Cheboi also urged members of the public to verify an advocate’s qualifications and practising status before engaging their services, noting that dealing with authorised legal practitioners was essential when seeking professional assistance.

He further advised clients to consider an advocate’s area of specialisation when selecting legal representation to ensure their matters are handled by practitioners with relevant expertise.

The commission chairperson emphasised the importance of agreeing on legal fees and other terms of engagement before a lawyer begins handling a case, saying clear arrangements could help prevent disputes between advocates and their clients.

He said improved public knowledge of the commission’s role would strengthen accountability within the legal profession and enable citizens to make informed decisions when seeking legal services.

Members of the public can access information about the commission through its website or visit its offices on the 20th floor of the Corporate Bank Building in Nairobi.

Meanwhile, Nairobi North Sub-Region County Commissioner Simon Osumba welcomed the commission’s outreach initiative, saying the engagement would help stakeholders understand the appropriate channels for reporting concerns about advocates’ professional conduct.

Osumba encouraged Nairobi residents to take advantage of the sensitisation programme to learn about the commission’s services and complaint procedures.

He also urged Kenyans to maintain peace and harmony before, during and after the next General Election, emphasising the importance of tolerance, peaceful coexistence and respect for differing opinions.

The administrator said maintaining peace was a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among communities, local leaders and government institutions.

The Nairobi engagement forms part of the commission’s wider public awareness campaign, which has seen it reach out to different regions to educate citizens and stakeholders on its mandate.

Before the sensitisation forum, the commission paid a courtesy call to the Nairobi Regional Commissioner, Rhoda Nyaboke Onyancha, at her office in Nairobi.

The outreach initiative seeks to improve public understanding of the mechanisms available for addressing complaints against advocates and promote greater accountability in the provision of legal services.
