Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe (EGH) has today flagged off 164 (1000 Lt) tanks to be distributed to eight (8) groups in Kauwi and Mutomo wards.
Speaking during the flagging off ceremony, the Governor said the project is an initiative of a collaboration between the County Government of Kitui and the Women Economic Empowerment – Climate Smart Agriculture (WEE-CSA) which is a four-year (2020-2023) gender-responsive climate-smart agriculture project being implemented in the Arid and Semi-arid lands (ASAL) counties of Laikipia, Kitui and West Pokot.
He said the project will increase inclusion of gender in climate-smart policies and regulations, and opportunities for women to financially invest in climate-resilient agriculture at the national, county and community levels-implemented by UNWOMEN through Anglican Development Services Eastern (ADSE).
The county chief further pointed out the project as key in increasing production, income levels, nutrition and gender-responsive climate-resilient livelihoods among targeted communities-implemented by FAO through the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock.
Further, 4 (10,000 lt) and 2 (10,000 lt) tanks will be distributed to groups in Kauwi and Athi ward respectively to facilitate tree nursery establishment.
Governor Dr. Malombe (EGH) has since signed an endorsement letter for extension of “Economic Empowerment of Women through Climate Smart Agriculture Phase II 2025-2028”. Phase II of the project will deepen activities in the current wards and extend to Kitui East Sub County.
