Outgoing Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura has officially bid farewell to the Office of the Government Spokesperson after serving for 33 months and 17 days, describing the institution’s transformation as a collective achievement driven by teamwork, professionalism and innovation.
Speaking during a six-hour farewell meeting held at Harambee Annex in Nairobi, Mwaura reflected on his tenure, thanking the 80-member staff for their dedication in transforming the office into a modern government communication institution.
The meeting brought together officers from the office’s six departments to reflect on milestones achieved since Mwaura assumed office on October 5, 2023, as the fifth Government Spokesperson under President William Ruto’s administration.
During the meeting, staff reviewed the office’s growth from a modest communication unit into a fully-fledged institution with six specialized departments and 33 communication products reaching millions of Kenyans through television, radio, newspapers and digital platforms.
Among the initiatives introduced during his tenure are Sema na Spox Bonga na Gava, the Weekly Government Bulletin, GoK Today, GAVA Quotes, feature stories, public service announcements, policy explainers and multimedia content aimed at making government information more accessible.
The office also conducted 274 national press briefings, providing regular updates on government policies, development programmes and national issues.
Addressing staff, Mwaura said the achievements recorded during his tenure belonged to the entire team.
“Today is not about saying goodbye. It is about celebrating what we have built together. Every milestone we have achieved carries the fingerprints of every member of this team. I may be leaving this office, but the institution we built together will continue serving Kenyans for many years to come,” he said.
He challenged the officers to uphold professionalism and continue embracing innovation in public communication.
“Institutions are not built by one person.
They are built by people who believe in a shared vision. Continue supporting one another, continue learning and never stop striving to communicate truthfully and professionally,” he added.
During his tenure, the office expanded its digital communication strategy by integrating social media, multimedia production and emerging artificial intelligence tools alongside traditional media platforms.
The Government Spokesperson’s Office also coordinated official communication during major national events, including the 2024 Gen Z protests, the Embakasi gas explosion, the El Niño emergency and the Elgeyo Marakwet mudslides, providing timely updates as government agencies responded to the crises.
Staff members praised Mwaura’s leadership, saying he created an environment that promoted mentorship, creativity, accountability and professional growth.
The meeting concluded with farewell messages, group photographs and expressions of gratitude from staff members who wished him success in his next assignment.
Mwaura leaves the Office of the Government Spokesperson following his appointment as the Head of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Disability Rights in the Executive Office of the President.
In his new role, he will spearhead national efforts to promote diversity, strengthen inclusion and advance the rights of persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups.
“Public service is a continuous journey. While my assignment is changing, my commitment to serving Kenya remains the same. I look forward to this new responsibility with the same passion and dedication that has guided me throughout my career,” Mwaura said.
He exits the office having overseen significant institutional expansion, strengthened government communication systems and left behind a team tasked with sustaining effective public engagemen
