Homabay Town Member of Parliament George Peter Kaluma has urged government to offer humanitarian assistance to aid the families affected by the ongoing rains that are causing havoc in the belt
Addressing Journalists at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday 29th November, Kaluma called upon the office of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua which is managing the situation to consider Homabay because many households including schools have been destroyed by the ongoing El-nino floods
He particularly mentioned primary schools that have been swept away, others marooned and submerged by the floods
“Our county has been largely affected just like North Eastern. We suffer the same blunt because our area is along the lake victoria so water falls clock the banks of the belt affecting anyone living there,” he stated
Backing the sentiments Karachuonyo legislator Andrew Adipo stated that all parts of suba North, Homabay town, Ragwea and end of Suba North, residents have been marooned by the floods
“More than half of population were to be evacuated. Affected families needs foods, blanket for sleeping and medical attention because many households and schools are under floods.
Children have been relocated, Schools have been demolished, latrines demolished, cholera and malaria outbreak has been reported,” Adipo remarked
However, Andrew Adipo, appreciated the efforts by red cross as they have been giving out some foodstuffs as well as nearby airport that has also accommodated some families
“We approached the President together with the Nyakach MP Joshua Aduma and we continue to make further appeals to hear our frustrations,’ Adipo disclosed
Adipo revealed that he wanted to build an evacuation centre supported by the government but until to date, no response
Their remarks were supported by county senator Beatrice Ogola calling upon the Kenya Kwanza Administration to declare the ongoing rais as a national disaster so that government can give it the attention it deserves
“We call upon the government to provide the necessary evacuation measures because basic services have been halted since the rains started causing havoc.
Women and children have totally been left helpless as houses are destroyed and children infected by the airborne diseases. We can’t continue watch our people lose lives anymore
They unanimously requested the relevant agencies to ensure evacuated families have been given something to eat as well as treating children of airborne and water diseases
