Kitui Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu has launched the upgrading of Wilikilye-Katulani-Kanyangi-Wote Road to bitumen standards at Katulani, Mulango ward.
The 82 kilometre B61 road will be done in three slots; Wikililye-Katulani (14 kilometre, Katulani-Kavisuni-Kanyangi road (46 kilometre) and Kanyangi-Thwake dam-Wote town (40 kilometre).
This is a Sh2.3 billion project that Governor Ngilu personally lobbied President Uhuru Kenyatta on behalf of Kitui people and the region.
China Civil Engineering Corporation Limited is the main contractor.
The project which is expected to be completed by May 2024 is aimed at improving the efficiency of road transport along the project corridor, to spur economic activity along the same route and enhance social welfare. The project will also enhance security and promote peace along the corridor.
The road starts at Wikililye market in Kitui County at the junction with Kibwezi-Kitui road and proceeds in a South Western direction through Katulani, Kavisuni, Kanyangi, Mbuimbui, Mathangathi, Makutano, Kikumini center and terminates at Wote town in Makueni county.
