Governor Malombe Unveils sand harvesting policy

Kitui County Government will have a policy and legislation that will govern sand harvesting going forward so as to curb smuggling and unscrupulous business people from the precious resources 

Speaking on Friday during the unveiling of the taskforce that Governor Dr Julius Malombe appointed to formulate the policy, county boss noted the need for the community to benefit from the extraction of the resources unlike before 

”The report we are unveiling today will be shared to the County Assembly for adoption of the policy and enactment of the bill so that we get the Kitui sand harvesting and management act that can be enforced “. – Governor Dr. Julius Malombe (EGH) during the unveiling of the Kitui County Sand Harvesting and Management Taskforce report. 

Backing the policy, Madam Esther Musili, who is the Chairperson of Taskforce on Sand Harvesting and Management noted to have involved many stakeholders across the vast county who submitted their memorandum on how they want sand harvesting to be done  

“The committee, in developing the comprehensive policy was guided by the Inter-generational Equity, Environmental Conservation and Equitable Share of Benefits”. β€”  Madam Esther Musili – Chairperson of Taskforce on Sand Harvesting & Management.

Mr. John Muthui – a member of the Secretariat to the Sand Harvesting and Management Committee, said a total of 2107 members of the public participated and made their contributions in the eight  subcounties that were visited. 

“Sixteen memoranda were physically received and others via the Taskforce mail. 26 civil society organizations and CBOs convened by Resource Conflict Institute  (RECONCILE) contributed to the Taskforce and management discussion,”.” β€”  Mr. John Muthui – a member of the Secretariat to the Sand Harvesting and Management Committee.

He further noted all public engagements were fruitful and healthy
