Kitui County is blessed to have both younger and old experienced politicians who can take up the government’s regional alignment

They include former long serving Ambassador and MP Kiema Kilonzo, former MPs David Musila, Charles Nyamai, former CS Peninah Malonza among others

With the Gachagua exit, Kenya is at point of a new political rebirth.

The Gachagua fall will definitely demand a fresh rebranding, restrategizing, realignment and positioning to face the new challenges that lay ahead.

For that reason, no politician or leader or a people worth their salt will just sit back and wait for manna to drop from heaven.

People, regions and individuals will rise up, be proactive and tap into their networks and exploit the prevailing political anxieties with a view to place themselves at the heart of Government and the new alignment.

The emerging alignments will become the new vehicles that will definitely shape the 2027 elections and beyond.

Thus, now is the time for an Ukambani regional rebirth.

In the ensuing political mix and undercurrents, how should Kitui and Ukambani at large act, benefit and restore its traditional position at the centre of Government decision making? How can the current crop of leaders restore the glory of our firebrand pre and post independence heroes of the Kenyatta and early Moi eras?

Who, among our leaders, can provide this strategic leadership? What qualities and capacities do they need?

Sadly, save for the Kalonzo axis, there is a big vacuum in Ukambani. This calls for a second force because for democracy to thrive, it must be competitive!

Notable figures who could be well placed for this role would best be accomplished leaders who don’t belong to the current Kalonzo axis but who have the experience and knowledge of Ukambanis political terrain.

In Kitui, such include former long serving Ambassador and MP Kiema Kilonzo, former MPs David Musila, Charles Nyamai, former CS Peninah Malonza among others

Similarly, former long serving leaders in Machakos and Makueni who had a strong footing in Wiper fit the bill.

But Ambassador Kilonzo is the most suitable person to lead a new political alignment in Kitui and the region.

He is a shrewd and smooth, free-wheeling operator with high connections in Kitui, Makueni and Machakos counties, government, business and international arena courtesy of his two term stint as MP and his ambassadorial duties since 2015.

Kiema honed his political skills shielding Kalonzo from attacks in the mean and treacherous ODM-K politics of conspiracy, backstabbing and all manner of treachery.

It was Kiema as Mutito MP and his fellow youthful Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo, Wiper Chair David Musila, Makueni MP Dan Maanzo and the late Machakos Town MP Daudi Mwanzia who formed a cordon around Kalonzo to ward off political hounds out to bar him from ascending to the highest echelons of power in Kenya.

Kiema and company spent tireless and sleepless nights scheming how to retain Kalonzo’s position of VP under President Mwai Kibaki and where he had to stave off attacks from Raila, Saitoti and the Mt Kenya political mafia.

So Kiema is no stranger to cut-throat competitive politics owing to his experience in Kalonzo’s ODM-K, the short stint in the NARC party and political balancing act of the diplomatic circles.

He could bring great skill, experience, exposure and the networks necessary to forging a formidable regional political bandwagon.

Much younger at 50s than the older veteran and equally popular Kitui leaders like, Musila, Ngilu and Malombe (70s and 80s), Kiema can easily warm his way into the youth fraternity and the middle age-group, women and professionals.

He transcends the regional, political and socio-economic divide in Kitui and Ukambani region.

Kiema’s past affinity to Wiper fraternity as a top ranking party functionary gives him the wherewithal to cajole, negotiate and lure whoever matters in building a formidable political force.
