Police in Mombasa are investigating an incident in which an aspirant for Mvita parliamentary seat, Ali Mwatsau, survived a Tuesday night assassination attempt after unknown gunmen sprayed his vehicle with 22 bullets.
According to a police report, Mwatsau, who is a UDA politician, was shot and critically injured by gunmen in Tudor’s informal settlements while returning home from a mosque after a prayer session.
According to the report, the gunmen, who were in two vehicles, fled immediately after the 10 pm Tuesday attack as the motive of the attack is not yet known.
Witnesses said that he sustained gunshot wounds on his arms and legs and was rushed to a Mombasa Hospital by a tuk-tuk rider, where he was promptly admitted and is presently in stable condition.
Police visited the scene and towed the car to the local police station after photographing the scene.
Detectives have launched a manhunt for the shooters as they also gathered evidence that would aid them to unravel the case.
