Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire has formally reported former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to police, accusing him and his allies of organizing chaos ahead of his planned tour of Mbeere North.

Speaking at Ishiara Police Station, Mbarire claimed she had credible information that Gachagua’s team was planning disturbances in Kanyuambora, Kabubua Ka Nyama, and Ishiara between Sunday, November 16, and Monday, November 24, 2025. According to her, the alleged plan is tied to Gachagua’s campaign efforts for Democratic Party parliamentary candidate Newton Kariuki Ndwiga, popularly known as Karish.
“I received information Friday evening that Gachagua and his allies intend to disrupt the peace during his visit,” Mbarire said. “They have even hired goons from outside Embu, Kayole, Embakasi, Ruiru, and other parts of the country, and issued them UDA-branded T-shirts to frame the party for the chaos. I have already submitted names to the police for investigation.”

Mbarire stressed that Embu would not tolerate violence or political disorder, noting that UDA campaigns in Mbeere North have been conducted peacefully. “No one is above the law, not even Gachagua,” she asserted.
UDA lawyer Adrian Kamotho added a legal twist, arguing that Gachagua has no right to campaign for a candidate from a party that is not fielding its own contestant in the by-election.
“Article 84 of the Constitution requires compliance with the electoral code of conduct,” Kamotho said. “DCP has no candidate in this race, so campaigning for the DP candidate is unlawful. We will petition the IEBC to disqualify Karish if this continues.”
Kamotho warned that both Gachagua and Karish risk sanctions, including possible disqualification, if the alleged campaigns proceed.
With only a week left until the by-election, the political tension is rising and all eyes are now on whether Gachagua will go ahead with his planned visit.
