Birdi orders supermarkets to adhere Presidential directive

It has emerged that majority of supermarkets and shops across the country have not adhered to government’s directive to reduce the price drop of maize

In our fact finding mission in different parts of Kenya to several leading supermarkets, safinews.co.ke has noted a ranging mismatch contrary to what was ordered by the Head of State through Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya

Our exposé found Muindi Mweusi supermarkets in Nairobi was retailing different variety apart from pembe, jogoo and soko which was supposed to be sold at ksh 100, instead their repackaged variety is going for Ksh 215

Quickmart supermarkets located at Nanyuki in Laikipia County hoarded their directed stock for reduction (pembe, soko, jogoo) instead started selling other varieties including amaize, maisha, kavangara, hostess while raha and rich poa variety is stocked in small shops 

We stretched to Kitui town at Naivas supermarket where we found a different variety of maize flour that seems to be a well repackaged to suit their brands 

Confirming the total disregard by the leading supermarkets and shops in Kenya, former Jubilee Party Nominated Member of Parliament Sornia Birdi said it’s a deliberate efforts by retailers to deceive shoppers 

“Some shopkeepers have not effected the price drop ordered by Uhuru. Let the people benefit!” Sonia Orders shops to rectify price as per directive.

On a quick intervention after safinews.co.ke broke up the news, Agriculture CS Peter Munya said the state will have a crackdown targeting millers who’ve hoarded their stocks contributing to the maize shortage.

“The ministry has also carried out an assessment of millers responsible disregarding President Uhuru’s directive,” Munya warned
