Wiper leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka’s son Kennedy Musyoka and Raila Odinga’s daughter Winnie Odinga are among the nine individuals elected by Parliament on Thursday, November 17, to represent the country in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The two, alongside former Kieni MP, Kanini Kega, former Balambala MP Abdikadir Aden and Mombasa busines mogul, Suleiman Shahbal, were the MPs elected on Azimio la Umoja tickets

Members of Parliament are set to enjoy hefty perks and allowances just like Kenyan lawmakers sitting in both the Senate and the National Assembly.

The MPs are entitled to a monthly gross salary of Ksh1.4 million, including their allowances.

Their gross salary is slightly above Kenyan MPs, who earn approximately Ksh1 million

Their perks are competitive, given their mandate of legislation, oversight and representation.

Winnie, Kalonzo’s son, and other EALA MPs will also be entitled to a high-end vehicle which is supposed to be provided by the country.

They will also visit the EALA member countries while executing their mandate. Additional allowances will be provided to facilitate their travels in the member countries.

However, each member state is required to make a contribution north of Ksh840 million per EALA guidelines to facilitate their operations.

There are 45 Members of EALA indirectly elected for a five-year term by their respective National Assemblies.

Their duties entail discussing all matters about the community and making recommendations to the council as it may deem necessary for the implementation of the treaty.

While serving, they may also sit in accounts, agriculture, tourism, legal, regional affairs, trade and investment committees established by EALA.
