Kenyan popular comedian Eric Omondi has been arrested outside parliamentary buildings over protesting for the high cost of living
Omondi, who had camped at Parliamentary gates, accompanied by other youths wore shorts without shirts
Defending his arrest, Omondi warned police not to touch him as he is constitutionally and legally allowed to picket and hold peaceful demonstrations
However, police insisted that he had not obtained certificate from the lawful authorities to hold protests in line with police act hence forcefully arrested and bundled him in a police van
He has been taken to central police station to answer any charges that will be levelled against him as per the laws of the land
They [ youths who were about one hundred in number] demanded government’s quick interventions to address the cost of living- days before the price of unga is skyrocketed
“We want wetangula: they chanted calling[Speaker of the National Assembly]Hatuna pesa, hatuna nguvu, watoto hawaendi shule, tumefungiwa nyuma alafu polisi ananiongelesha.
You want us to pave way for traffic whereas this is just a small thing; you can divert traffic but you can’t divert unga, you can’t divert school fees, you can’t avert fuel, tax, unemployment-no way, we can’t leave this place before Wetangula comes,” Omondi pokes
They argued that Members of Parliament have failed to discuss issues affecting mwananchi instead debating about how their salaries will be increased and creating more positions
This comes barely after the new administration increased the university fees from Ksh 26,000 per year to Ksh 54,000 per year
Majority of stakeholders among them Universities Academic Staff Union, students and opposition leaders have raised an alarm and demanding stoppage of such draconian policies
