The National Assembly Committee on Energy and Petroleum has slammed Kenya Power and Lighting Company Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Joseph Siror a sum of 500,000 shillings for not appearing before the committee to answer concerns arising from the Members of Parliament
Mwala Constituency legislator led committee Eng Vincent Musyoka read a riot act after the MD deliberately failed to honor the committee’s summons which had invited him to shed light on why some transformers are illegally transferred to rich families depriving the poor ones

One of the incident is where it was reported that several transformers were removed by KPLC officials from Embakasi and installed at Kitsuru suburbs in Nairobi
The committee has now directed the legal counsel to relook on the possible clauses that can amount to the removal of the Mr Siror for taking granted on the people’s representatives when they require answers from the company
The company is also accused of nepotism on employing workers at Turkana Wind Power
One of the questions had been sought by Embakasi South lawmaker Musili Mawathe requiring the MD to inform the committee on why there has been no power supply at Mukuru Kwa Njenga area in Embakasi South Constituency for almost three (3) years and plans by KPLC to ensure the people living in this area are connected to electricity.
The legislators also wanted the committee be furnished with detailed information on reasons why KPLC is overcharging customers for electricity connection and the criteria used to determine the charges for power connections for customers.
Aggrieved by the matters Gem MP Eng Elisha Odhiambo noted some level of mockery by the management of the KPLC which needs to be addreesed if possible, at the whole floor of the House to bring decorum and order
They also sought the management to shed light on the Progress of the strategic initiatives being implemented to improve the financial position of KPLC and the status of the implementation of the turn-around strategy.
Others issied raised were to provide progress report of the ‘Update Meter Yako’ campaign that aims to upgrade 7.4 million pre-paid meters ahead of the 31st August 2024 deadline.
According to Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Energy Alex Wachira who appeared before the committee told MPs that he would work closely with them to iron ought all matters that pertains the docket
He too pleaded with the Members of Parliament to allow them sort out issues at the KPLC while assuring their overzealous customers who have lacked the last mile connectivity services that they are commitment to deliver
