Auditor General reports a damning misappropriations and embezzlement of public funds at Nairobi County Government

Governor Sakaja is reported of unaccounting Sh 12 billion for the year ending June 2024

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino now demands Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to be prosecuted for misappropriations and embezzlement of funds amounting to Sh12 billion out of Sh400 billion spent for the year ending June, 2024


While addressing Journalists at his office in Nairobi on 5th April, 2024, Owino, relying on Auditor General’s report 2023/2024, Babu stated that out of the lost funds, there are Sh30 billion unaccounted for which was withdrawn to compensate victims of Embakasi Gas explosion but did not help the targeted victims


Another Sh2.2 billion was paid to ghost workers while another Sh226 million from salary accounts was paid to over 46 fictitious accounts


In the report, plugs another whooping Sh30 million paid to an advocate for alleged threat to not pay pensions while another Sh20 million paid to a law firm for a miscellaneous case


Bbau aslo listed another questionable payment where eleven advocates owed Ksh10.1 billion and 11 further advocates being owed Ksh10.8 billion


Ksh772 million used to purchase 27 county tipper lorries used to collect garbage while a whooping Sh67 million was paid to a county attorney for not shortlisting a traffic martial in Nairobi


As per Nancy Gachungu’s report, Governor Sakaja’s county paid Sh77.6 million for county vehicles that were initially capped at Ksh100 million raising further questions on the loss of public funds


Additionally, 395 county employees were over paid 300 million shillings which is still unaccounted for during the year under review


The 50 million shillings was also paid to the environment and land court to a non-existing case recorded being of 2018


According to AG’s report 2023/2024, recurrent budget surpassed the 35 per cent capping over development vote as per the public finance management act


There’s adverse opinion in the report meaning AG cannot comprehend the financial reports provided by the Governor where he cannot account for the Ksh 9 billion


Dr Owino accused the Governor stating that he is now working tirelessly to ensure the efforts to investigate him and be prosecuted does see the light of the day
