The Opposition has called off Presidential directive to strip off roles of National Land Commission on valuation and compensation to the Ministry of Land

In a detailed statement seen by safinews.co.ke, on Friday, 23rd May, from the National Assembly Minority Leader, Opiyo Wandayi, inked such directive are unconstitutional and should not be accepted by all means

“The National Land Commission is mandated to report to the Parliament and the President annually, subject to Article 254; and the Auditor General, as per Article 229(2) must as well audit the commission’s accounts,”. Read statement.

Opiyo opined that, the legislative mechanisms laid down are enough to hold any corrupt officials accountable and therefore any arbitrary transfer of powers and functions from the NLC to the MoL is totally retrogressive to the constitution and unacceptable

“We demand that the National Land Commission Powers be left intact as was originally envisaged by the constitution and other enabling legislation,” He added

This comes barely two days, after the President on Sunday 21st May, in Isiolo during the thanksgiving service, removed valuation and compensation powers from NLC to the Ministry of Lands

Going forward the commission will no longer decide where the compensation will happen, who is going to benefit and how much it should be awarded,” Ruto said om Sunday accompanied by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua
