According to details seen by safinews.co.ke on Monday 24th July, President William Ruto is plotting to introduce new taxes should the opposition and the court block the implementation of finance act 2023

At a glance, motorists will pay the motor vehicle tax for use of public roads

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on the other hand,  has moved to expand its tax base to net small-scale traders who import goods in pools.

On Monday 24th July, the taxman directed all traders who ship goods to pay taxes on their cargo per item.

The new tax payment mode shifts from the current one, where levies on consolidated cargo have been paid per kilogramme.

“We have noted a significant level of undervaluation or lack of full disclosure in the declarations. The general cargo/ goods are currently charged customs duty at KSh 270 per kg. These include the so-called mulika mwizi phone.

KRA irected traders to pay the taxes within 21 days or risk their goods being auctioned. Excisable goods i.e smart phones, perfumes, cosmetics products and electronics are charged duty based on the unit value,” KRA acting commissioner general Rispah Simiyu explained.

The taxman further asked importers to address shipping documents in their names. “KRA reminds importers and consolidators importing goods for trade purposes to ensure that shipping documents are correctly addressed in the importer’s name,” it stated.
