Kitui: Over 1,800 Kitui Schools Gets Clean Water

He has partnered with different foreign NGOs in bringing clean, safe and affordable water in to rural areas

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe on Thursday 26th September, 2024 graced the REACH Kitui Close-out Workshop themed Enhancing Water Sector Development in Drylands in the Face of Climate Uncertainties,” bringing together stakeholders to discuss the water security initiatives in the county.

In his remarks, the Governor said the county, jointly with the REACH programme, has made water accessible to more people through progressive initiatives aimed at enhancing access to clean, safe, and affordable water for residents in the county.

According to the Governor, the partnership has been key in professionalizing the operation and maintenance of rural handpumps and boreholes in Kitui County, county-wide mapping of community water sources and their performance audit, county-wide assessment of the status of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services in over 1,800 Kitui schools, groundwater quality studies to understand risks and management opportunities, collaboration in the development of the first Kitui Water Services Bill and Policy, and the Women in Water Forum – Kitui.

Further, the county chief expressed the county’s commitment to utilizing the knowledge generated by the REACH Programme over the last eight years to aid in the attainment of SDG 6 on Water and Sanitation for All.

Others present included Professor Rob Hope, Professor Francis Mulaa, Professor Margaret Hutchinson, and Professor Daniel Olago, among others.
