Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today chaired the inaugural meeting for the County steering Group – Drought Risk Management at the county headquarters.
The National Government in consultation with the county government and development partners have developed an inclusive drought risk management coordination mechanism with an objective to
•√Access the ongoing drought response interventions including resources.
•√Prioritize drought response interventions (food, water, livestock, education and health)
•√ Establish a committee for receiving relief food, overseeing targeting and distribution and accountability of the resources.
•√Discuss and harmonize the mode of intervention – whether to adopt cash transfers of relief food.
•√ Establish monitoring and evaluation and
•√Operationalize the county steering group secretariat.
The meeting was attended by County Commissioner Erastus Mbui and officers from the World Food program, NDMA, Red-cross, the World vision and CARITAS, among other development partners.
The needs assessment across the ASAL counties will provide a snapshot on how the drought situation is progressing and will inform immediate interventions even as food security is rapidly deteriorating.
Globally, drought ranks first among the natural hazards when measured by number of people impacted.
