Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe (EGH) today graced the launch of the International Nurses and Midwives week in Kitui bringing together nurses and midwives from across the country.
In his speech, Governor Malombe commended the nurses and midwives for their contributions and sacrifices towards realizing a healthy population in our county and the world.
The County Chief noted the celebration as key in promoting awareness of the crucial care provided by nurses and midwives to the community especially mothers and the newborns.
He challenged nurses and midwives to be at the forefront in addressing the global health challenges post the coronavirus pandemic to improve the healthcare for all across the world.
Noting the Kenya’s maternal mortality rate as 342 mothers per 100,000 live births, Governor Malombe said it was unacceptable, as the Sustainable Development Goal targets to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births before 2030.
He said his government is closely working with partners and stakeholders, among them nurses and midwives, to improve the quality of reproductive, adolescent, maternal and child health.
Further, the Governor said his administration will engage 10 Community Health Promoters in each of the 247 villages to supplement and complement the services offered by nurses.
This year’s theme for the International Nurses and Midwives week is ”Our Nurses. Our Future” and “Art of Science of Midwifery; Celebrating Evidence to Reality”.
