Another mega water project, was commissioned by government of Kitui County under the stewardship of Governor Dr Julius Makau Malombe.

The project which is situated within the water-scarce Ikanga Ward in Kitui South Sub-County, was jointly implemented by the County Government, WeltHungerHilfe – a German NGO operating in Eastern Kenya – and local community members.

Yongela project comprises 2 concrete tanks of 100,000 and 50,000 litres each, a 21.3-kilometer long pipeline extension and seven water kiosks, and is expected to serve over 5,000 beneficiaries.

Speaking when he presided over the project’s handover to the community on behalf of the Water and Irrigation Minister Peter Nkunda, the County Water Director Eng Kennedy Mutati, affirmed that, Govenor Malombe’s administration will continue working with all development partners to address water challenges facing Kitui people.

Director Mutati further said, through such a partnership, Yongela residents will no longer have to trek for kilometers or spend long hours in search of water for domestic use or for their animals.

He as well underscored the application of professional management which is inline with Water Service Regulatory Board (WASREB), urging them to own and take care of the project to guarantee its sustainability.

WeltHungerHilfe’s Project Manager Benedict Mailu reiterated the agency’s readiness for continued collaboration with the county government in implementation of life-changing initiatives in the County.

Ikanga MCA Hon Cyrus Musyoka, Kitui South Water Engineer John Ngiti and area assist chief Cecelia Mutisya, among other officers graced the event.
