Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu has directed the Nairobi Water and Sewarage Company to stop the spillage of sewer into the Nairobi National Park.
“I have today directed the Nairobi Water and Sewarage Company to immediately repair their blocked manholes in order to stop spillage of sewer to the Nairobi National Park,” stated Kananu.
Speaking during the World Environment Day event in Lang’ata along the Southern bypass, Kananu said her administration will enforce strict regulations to ensure the Nairobi National Park is protected from toxic waste.
The Nairobi City County Government will partner with the Kenya Wildlife Service and other stakeholders to restore the park.
“We are going to impose strict regulations to protect the unique park from degradation. We support the Waste-Free Parks initiative by KWS,” said Kananu.
She called on residents to stop littering the park.
The Waste-Free Parks initiative is aimed at averting pollution at the park and the degradation of nature.
The Governor further appealed to Nairobi residents to be responsible for their environment for the benefit of their children and the future generation.
“We will continue to use the World Environment Day to make people aware of the issues we are facing. Let this day also serve as a reminder for us to strengthen the world and ensure that nature is preserved,” added Kananu.
The World Environment Day event was organized by the Dawoodi Bohra Community in partnership with KWS and the Nairobi City County Government.
Speaking during the event, KWS assistant director Vincent Ongwae hailed Governor Kananu for her initiative to save the environment adding that a quick mechanism must be initiated to save the good name of the Nairobi National Park.
“We thank the Governor for issuing the orders to the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company. The issue has been a danger to our animals and nature at large,” said Ongwae.
Dawoodi Bohra Community representative Abdulkadir Zakir stated that environmental matters have been in their hearts for ages.
“Today as we gather here, we celebrate our achievement in matters concerning environment conservation and we thank the Nairobi City County Government for supporting our initiative to save the environment,” said Zakir.
The theme for this year’s celebrations was “Only One Earth”, focusing on living sustainably in harmony with nature.
In attendance were county executive committee member for environment Larry Wambua, Lang’ata sun-county administrator Seline Ogola, among other officials.
Wambua said he will make sure all the directives issued by the Governor will be initiated and implemented.
“Let me assure you that all that the Governor has said here today, I will personally take the initiative and ensure they are implemented. We must respect nature and environment,” he said.
