Standing before the morning plenary session on Wednesday, Kamene told Members of Parliament there’s need for TSC to give detailed report on how they conducted recruitment exercise since there are so many regions lacking teachers

“Could the Commission explain how the Kshs. 6.4 Billion allocated in the Supplementary Budget I of the Financial Year 2022/23 for the purposes of teacher recruitment was utilized,” The second term and vocal legislator demanded answers from the Nancy Macharia led commission

She further sought the commission to clearly highlight the number of teachers recruited by gender, counties and People With Disabilities, particularly in Machakos County

“Le that Commission elaborate on the prospects of the 26,000 individuals engaged as teacher interns and share the contingency plans in place to safeguard their livelihoods once their internship contracts are concluded,” She questioned

The Machakos Woman Representative who has been very candid on matters people’s welfare demanded TSC to state the action plan undertaken by the Commission to ensure that there is fairness and equity in future teacher recruitment exercises and the adequate deployment of teachers in special needs schools countrywide

“Elucidate the monitoring and evaluation tools currently utilized to assess the effectiveness of the training provided to teachers and school administrators in the competency-based curriculum, considering the ongoing challenges faced by parents who find themselves assisting with homework as de facto teachers,” she asked

The questions was committed and will be replied before the Departmental Committee on Education by the Teachers Service Commission

This comes few days after a group of TSC interns particularly from lower eastern region sought parliament to intervene on the unnecessary deductions done by TSC yet they are paid Sh 20,000 monthly

According to the open letter seen by safinews.co.ke , teachers who were engaged through internship programme are taking home between Sh16,500- 17,000 after statutory deductions pegged by the current regime

They wanted Departmental Committee on Education and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino to address the issue and stop TSC from making further deductions until they secure permanent and pensionable jobs
