Media Council of Kenya has condemned with the strongest terms possible behaviour of police officers masquerading as journalists to arrest protesters
In a statement released to newsroom signed by MCK CEO Mr David Omwonyo, criticised the behaviour as unprofessional and tainting the work of journalists
“The Media Council of Kenya has noted with deep concerns cases of security officers camouflaging as journalists covering protests with intent to arrest protesters
Impersonations of journalists by the police is a grave unprofessional misconduct on the part of police and endangers the life of journalists in the line of duty,” Omwonyo noted
MCK noted that, “while we appreciate the release of journalists apprehended by police during the Wednesday’s demonstrations in line of their call to duty, the detaining of journalists were unnecessary, arbitrarily and ridiculous,”.
The journalists regulator further added that the work of journalists is protected under Article 33, 34 and 35 in the constitution, a right that should be respected by all
