Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has firmly dismissed claims of a political fallout between him and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, calling the rumours “propaganda” meant to distract from the county’s development agenda.

Speaking during the official opening of the National Macadamia Conference at the University of Embu on Wednesday 4th June, Kindiki addressed swirling speculation over alleged meetings held behind Governor Mbarire’s back. “Those leaders that are moving around saying that there is a split between me and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire should know that Mbarire and I are on very good terms and should stop spreading the propaganda immediately,” said Kindiki.

His remarks come just days after Governor Mbarire, who was conspicuously absent from the event, raised alarm over secret night meetings allegedly convened to plot her ouster. Kindiki categorically denied involvement in any such gatherings. “We are working together for the growth, development, and betterment of Embu County,” he emphasized, warning political operatives against sowing seeds of division.

Support for Macadamia Farmers

Kindiki reiterated the government’s firm support for the macadamia sector, noting its transformative impact on farmers’ livelihoods across the region.

In furtherance to his earlier assertion, affirmed farmers that the government will continue supporting macadamia farmers in the country since the cash crop has uplifted many lives

He further announced that the government is scaling up subsidies on fertilizer and macadamia seeds to ease the financial burden on farmers. “We are committed to ensuring macadamia farmers reap huge profits from their efforts,” Kindiki emphasized.

He assured farmers of the government’s continued collaboration through research, innovation, and market access initiatives. “The government is closely working with macadamia farmers to ensure they continue to reap great benefits from macadamia farming,” he said.

Kindiki Opposes Muguka Ban

Turning to the contentious Owen Baya Muguka Bill, Kindiki reassured Embu residents that he would do everything within his power to ensure the bill does not pass into law. “I know Embu people have greatly relied on and benefited from Muguka. As the Deputy President, I will do my best to ensure the bill does not pass, in order to protect the livelihoods of Embu people,” he stated.

County Government United – Deputy Governor

Backing Kindiki’s sentiments, Embu Deputy Governor Kinyua Mugo, who represented Governor Mbarire at the event, affirmed the unity within the county government and its continued alignment with the national administration. “As Embu County, we are still in government, and we are not planning to leave. Those that are spreading false information should stop,” said Mugo.

Macadamia Farming Takes Centre Stage

The conference, which attracted farmers in large numbers, highlighted the lucrative potential of macadamia farming in the region.

University of Embu Vice Chancellor Prof. Daniel Mugendi urged locals to embrace macadamia farming, praising the university’s ongoing efforts in supporting the crop’s production. “Macadamia farming is very profitable, and we are proud of the progress we are making here in Embu,” said Prof. Mugendi.

Youth macadamia farmer David Gitonga also delivered an inspiring address, urging young people to pursue agriculture as a viable and rewarding livelihood. “Macadamia farming has enabled me to overcome major life challenges and achieve success. In Embu, we’ve launched a programme where soccer players run nurseries to plant and grow macadamia seedlings, which they later transplant and nurture to maturity,” he explained.

Another farmer, Catherine Wanja, echoed the call, encouraging fellow farmers to venture into macadamia farming due to its profitability.

The National Macadamia Conference runs through Friday, June 6, 2025, and aims to boost agricultural innovation, investment, and youth participation in the sector, with strong backing from both the national and county governments.
