Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today flagged off the first batch of assorted drugs and non-pharmaceuticals worth sh. 108 million at the County Referral Hospital in Kitui town.
The national government’s stake in today’s consignment was sh. 12 million as part of the universal healthcare efforts in the country.
The move by the county boss is among the promises he made to initiate in the first 100 days in office.
The acquisition seeks to deal with serious drug shortage that has hit the public health centres for long risking the grounding of health services in the county.
A general spot check revealed that a number of sub-county hospitals, health centres and dispensaries have been grappling with acute shortage of essential drugs for the longest period.
Governor Malombe’s focus on better healthcare seeks to make the population productive to support the economy, considering that 70 per cent of the county’s rural population depend on manual work for survival.
“We will also invest more on preventive healthcare to ensure our people are healthy. We must be keen also on maintaining our health facilities.” Governor Malombe said.
The Governor also noted his government would lay down plans to bolster cancer management specifically through enhanced screening for early detection.
KEMSA’s Official Isabella Mugada affirmed the agency’s commitment to support Governor Malombe’s agenda to actualize universal healthcare for Kitui people.
