Embu Senator Alexander Munyi Mundigi has condemned the June 25th protests in Embu County, terming them illegal and destructive, warning that the chaos has pushed the county’s economy to the brink.

Speaking during a press conference a day after Governor Cecily Mbarire also criticized the unrest, Mundigi described the protests as a “coordinated act of hooliganism” masked as political demonstrations, blaming criminal elements for the large-scale looting and destruction.

“We passed by all the businesses that were looted yesterday, and what we witnessed was total destruction. What has taken us two years to build was brought down in a single day,” said an emotional Mundigi.

Among the hardest hit were government institutions and major commercial establishments, including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), National Bank, Safaricom Shop, Maathai Supermarket, and numerous local enterprises and hotels.

The senator warned that the fallout from the destruction is dire. “Fifty employees at Maathai Supermarket have lost their jobs. Their families now face an uncertain future with no income,” he said. “This kind of lawlessness must not be allowed to continue.”

Mundigi accused some local leaders of fueling the chaos by aligning themselves with disruptive forces, saying such alliances were undermining Embu’s development. “There are leaders in this county who are actively working with those bent on destroying Embu. I urge them to stop being pawns in a game that only leads to our county’s downfall,” he charged.

The senator also raised the alarm over potential investor flight following the violent protests, urging all Embu leaders to unite and restore confidence in the county’s future. “No investor will bring their money where there’s instability. If we don’t act now, Embu will be left behind,” Mundigi warned.

Calling for calm and collective action, Senator Mundigi urged residents and leaders alike to reject violence and instead focus on rebuilding and safeguarding the progress Embu has made.
