The Democratic Citizens Party (DCP) has officially endorsed Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji to contest the Embu gubernatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a fierce political showdown with incumbent Governor Cecily Mbarire.

Speaking during the Embu Inaugural DCP Aspirants’ Forum held at a hotel in Embu, former Embu County Deputy Speaker Steve Simba declared Mukunji the party’s gubernatorial Flag bearer, hailing his leadership track record in Manyatta.
“Gitonga Mukunji is ripe for leadership. He has delivered for the people of Manyatta, and now it’s time he delivers for the whole county. As DCP Embu, we are fully behind him,” Simba announced.

Simba also launched a blistering attack on President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing the regime of betraying Kenyans and suppressing dissent, particularly among the youth.
“The Ruto government has failed. There’s widespread police brutality targeting Gen Zs, and they’re trying to silence critics. As DCP, we won’t stand by while our youth are killed and our voices stifled,” Simba stated.

Turning his focus to Embu’s leadership, Simba accused Governor Cecily Mbarire of underperformance and mismanagement, claiming her time in office is up.
“Mbarire has shown she cannot run Embu. We need a new leader with energy and vision. Mukunji is that leader.” Simba reiterated.

Echoing Simba’s sentiments, Evurore MCA Duncan Mbui raised red flags over a possible scheme to rig the 2027 elections. He criticized recent remarks by Kenya Kwanza about “topping up” votes and slammed the government for dragging its feet on reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

“We demand to know, where will those extra votes come from? This is a calculated plot to rig the election, and we as DCP will not allow it,” Mbui warned.

Senatorial aspirant Mukami Mbogo, representing Gen Z under the DCP banner, also joined the chorus of criticism. She accused the current regime of suppressing youth voices and ignoring their concerns. “This government fears the youth because we are truthful. But we won’t be silenced. Gen Z is rising, we are ready to lead, we can no longer be silenced. We will take on the leadership of this country in 2027” Mukami declared.

The endorsement comes just days after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua toured Meru and Embu counties, as political temperatures in the Mt. Kenya region begin to rise ahead of the 2027 polls. The DCP forum, attended by a host of aspirants, signaled the party’s growing influence and intention to challenge the political status quo in Embu.
