The much-anticipated Embu Sevens kicked off in style on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the scenic Njukiri Showground, marking the first-ever leg of the National Circuit to be staged in Embu.
The tournament, officially opened by Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, drew top rugby sides from across the country in what is the fourth leg of the 2025 Rugby Sevens Series.

Kenya Rugby Union Director Moses Mukabane praised this year’s edition, noting record sponsor turnout and a buzzing fan base. “This year’s event is bigger and better. Sponsors have come out in large numbers, and the fan turnout is incredible. Njukiri’s serene environment makes Embu special and we expect even more fans as the action heats up,” Mukabane said.

But he also called for improved infrastructure to cater for the growing rugby audience, adding, “With time, Embu will be able to host even larger crowds.”

On the pitch, the opening day produced plenty of fireworks. Nakuru RFC set the tone with a hard-fought 17–12 victory over Nondescripts in a duel that kept fans on their toes. Kenya Harlequin followed with a commanding performance, brushing aside Zetech 26–12 with pace and precision.
The afternoon clash between Catholic Monks and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) delivered one of the day’s closest finishes, as MMUST edged out the Monks 17–14 in a dramatic nail-biter. Mwamba RFC then imposed their dominance with a clinical 17–0 shutout of hosts Embu Dragons, before their women’s side capped the day in style, overwhelming Rackets Ladies 36–5.
With the crowd roaring and teams battling for supremacy, the stage is set for an electrifying weekend as the Embu Sevens cements its place on the national rugby calendar.
