Embu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Jamal Runyenjes, has firmly dismissed reports that two accident victims were neglected at Embu Level 5 Hospital on Monday morning, July 14, 2025.

Addressing journalists, Runyenjes called the circulating claims “misleading” and urged the public to stop spreading falsehoods.

“The information that has been going round is inappropriate and misleading and should stop being spread,” he said.

According to the Health CEC, the two patients involved in a boda boda accident were brought to the hospital at different times, one at 6:57 a.m. and the other at 7:00 a.m.. Both were admitted to the casualty department in stable condition.

He clarified that one of the patients went to the X-ray department on his own at 7:38 a.m., without being officially booked in by a doctor, which caused confusion.
“On arriving at the X-ray Department, the patient could not be attended to by the X-ray expert as he had not been booked,” Jamal explained.

The incident sparked outrage among fellow boda boda riders, who had already gathered at the hospital demanding swift treatment for their injured colleagues. In the chaos, they reportedly picked the patients using hospital stretchers and loaded them onto a pickup truck before leaving.

“This agitated other boda boda riders that had already stormed the hospital… A commotion arose and this is what made the other boda boda riders pick the two patients using the hospital stretchers and put them to a pickup and drove away,” he added.

Jamal also revealed that medics at the facility have been receiving threats and warned against politicising health services. He accused unnamed individuals with private hospital interests of trying to discredit the public hospital system.

“Some individuals are not happy when government institutions are running and operating smoothly… They have been treating the government hospital as a competitor and could therefore do anything to tarnish the name of Embu Level 5 Hospital,” he claimed.

He urged residents to support medical personnel and avoid interfering with hospital operations.
“The medics… are not working to profit the Embu Level 5 Hospital but instead to offer medical services to patients at all times,” he said.

“Handling patients recklessly like carrying them in a pickup is to risk the patients’ lives and is against the law as patients should only be handled by trained personnel.”
Runyenjes further cautioned against the growing trend of political interference in health service delivery.

“There are no patients that belong to the government and others to the opposition. All patients are equal and receive similar services in our hospitals,” he said.

He appealed to boda boda riders to resist political manipulation and instead support the very medics who treat them.

The Health CEC concluded by confirming that the incident is under official investigation.
“The issue of improper discharge of two patients at the Embu Level 5 Hospital has already been reported and is currently under investigations,” he stated.

Runyenjes also challenged those spreading the two-hour neglect claim to produce evidence, reaffirming the county’s commitment to transparent and accountable healthcare service delivery.
