Sufuria Movement Demands Gov’t Compensates Kisumu Police Brutality Victims

  • This comes while the two warring parties have been seeking solutions to end backfiring
  • Prof Fred Ogola, leading the lobby group, seeks restorative justice to the victims as they may end up not represented
  • However, their petition is at the mercy of the Kisumu High Court to determine how the verdict will affect the victims

The Linda Jamii na Ugatuzi Initiative on Monday 11the September moved to Kisumu Law Court to petition against police brutality and luo massacre during the previous anti-government protests

In an unprecedented bold move, the lobby group sought the honourable court to order the Government of Kenya to compensate handsomely, victims of police brutality, meted against the people of Kisumu unconstitutionally

“We want the court to order Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki and Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to produce records of all internal inquiries, investigations and or  prosecutions into police brutality during the demonstrations

The court should further order the government to produce cases of all victims of demonstrations, who lost their loved ones, those who were injured or lost properties by the police brutality, during the anti-government protests,” Read part of the petition submitted before the Kisumu Law Court

In their hardlined position, Petitioners, have told the Court that, while politicians are sitting at Bomas of Kenya to sort out their issues, Kenyans who paid the ultimate price should also receive restorative justice or be compensated 

“While the National Dialogue Team continues to chart out it’s agenda at Bomas of Kenya, we also hope that the plight of victims of violence by State and it’s actors are resolved. Let’s put an end to these historical injustices,” It added  

The plea, is to ensure that never again, police will not silence the people while exercising their constitutional right; of picketing, assembling and petitioning public office for accountability

“As the president of Sufuria revolution movement Kenya, am looking forward to a country that stands for peace,development and sustainable goals. We make a covenant that we members of Kisumu County will not die again in the hands of police just because we are exercising our Constitutional rights,” Prof Fred Ogola Stated.

He further castigated President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as well as Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa for not showing sympathy for the victims of police brutality 

“We reiterate the need to have justice systems that provides for fair hearing and determination in reference to the Constitution. We helping in demonstrating that Kisumu residents are champions of peace and hospitality,” He added

In their previous responses that police encountered protesters wisely, has been condemned harshly as to be the reason behind why some certain ethnic groups were targeted, killed by gun shots, while others were scot freely demonstrating unhurt

“It was reported that during the demonstrations, some police officers who were agents of CS Kindiki and Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome used firearms to shoot at demonstrators and persons who were not demonstrating including children of tender age to death.

We intend to champion for peace and Coexistence amongst the people of Kisumu County. Sufuria revolution movement Kenya’s position is that we shouldn’t loose lives in the hands of rogue police officers in the current modern age and times. ,” Prof Fred Ogola Stated

According to the civil society, Kisumu residents have courageously been fighting for the democracy,  but are left  discriminated, when it comes to sharing of national resources as other parts of the country are developed on their behest 

“It’s worth that until now, the Inspector General of Police has not made public as per the constitutional edict under Article 35 (1) and (3) of the constitution the report on all incidences of unlawful police shooting during the demonstrations.

Furthermore, the public is not aware of any investigations and prosecutions into the said police shootings during the demonstrations across the country, Particularly in Kisumu County where it was reported to have formed the bulk of police shootings,” They demanded for the just society  

Safinews.co.ke has established that the petition was certified as urgent as the petitioners want the case to be heard as soon as possible even when the judges are on recess to enable justice 

Sufuria revolution movement Kenya is an organisation that was formed out of the recently organised demonstrations for the clarion call for push against high Cost of living,respect to the rule of law and Inclucivity amongst the Kenyan population.

The movement is a none profit making body and its intentions is to address the problems that faces the people of Kenya.
