The National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations questioned the Cabinet Secretary, Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations, Hon. Aden Duale, over recent surge in terror attacks on Kenyan Military personnel.
Led by Committee Chair Hon. Nelson Koech (Belgut), Members sought to know the causes of the attacks, and measures taken to contain them.
Members noted that the attacks had occasioned persistent loss of lives among KDF personnel and damaged crucial security and defence equipment.
Hon. Duale said the attacks on KDF personnel was part of the Al-shabaab terrorist agenda in Somalia with the intent of widening their political influence across the border.
The CS, told the Committee the Department of Defence had instituted measures to thwart planned attacks within and beyond the two regions.
“Collaboration with regional and international partners has aided intelligence and information sharing in the war against terrorism, thereby enhancing capacity to protect,” said Duale.
During the meeting, Members also raised questions about the planned withdrawal of Kenyan troops in Somalia under ATMIS at the end of next year, and its likely implications on Kenyan Defence.
Hon. Duale said the KDF would institute necessary measures to deal with any implications of the pullout including enhancing surveillance and intelligence collection.
