Nairobi, 6th April, 2023 – The Nairobi City County Public Health Department , under who’s management the City Mortuary falls, will in the next 45 days unveil a private wing at the mortuary.
Said Tom Nyakaba, Chief Officer, Public Health,”City mortuary is the largest government owned mortuary facility in East and Central Africa currently has six (6) functional coolers with a capacity to store 200 bodies. In the next 45 days, we intend to unveil a private wing that will be able to hold 24 bodies. The wing will provide hearse and other related lowering gear services.”
Chief Officer Nyakaba also intimated that the facility is also set to unveil a Chapel which will be manned by a chaplain who can offer funeral services to those who are unable to secure a church facility before burying their kin.
Said Tom Nyakaba, Chief Officer, Public Health, “Together with Chief Officer, Health facilities Mr. Mosiria, we have engaged a contractor to ensure all coolers are repaired and restored to excellent working condition so as to give proper and dignified services to Nairobians who have lost their loved ones. Under Governor Sakaja’s leadership, we will ensure those who have lost their loved ones are treated with respect as a mark of last respect.”
The County’s Public Participation, Public Engagement and Customer Service Chief Officer, Ms. Mathia also said that her department would employ five (5) customer service officers to handle customer care matters in the facility. Said Ms Mathia, “A funeral gives friends and relatives an opportunity to express the love and respect they feel for someone who was important to them. For starters, we will have five (5) officers deployed to the county funeral home to assist with recording admissions and receiving clients. as well as increasing client public awareness and knowledge of how the funeral process works and assisting the family deal with the loss experienced in a dignified manner.”
Mr Nyakaba also confirmed that the county government will continue beefing up security at the facility and increase the number of officers from 6 to 10.
